Behind the Brew
Bock beers originated in a small German town called Einbeck. The style became popular quickly and was adopted by many others. Once it traveled to Munich, the heavy Bavarian accents made it sound like “Ein Bock” which translates to billy goat. Since then, the style has been referred to as Bock with many substyles to follow. Bock is also the inspiration of our Bock Fest at the brewery, including the infamous search for the Seven Bocks of Winter. Legend has it that if all seven Bocks are found, winter will release its icy grip, which, as most Minnesotan’s know, is time come March! Drink a Bock and help us beckon warmer weather!
Food Pairings
Bock beer is the original “liquid bread,” so it is only fitting that this beer would be an ideal match with food. The key with pairing this beer is to avoid delicate foods, as they will easily be overpowered by this beer. Look towards wild game and pork with potatoes, squash, and mushrooms, whose earthy character should compliment the nutty maltiness of the beer nicely. Cheeses with a similar nutty/earthy profile such as Swiss Gruyere and Emmental will also work. For a totally different direction, remember that “sweet calms heat,” and try pairing the Bock with full flavored, spicy foods.
